On Wednesday evening the Trump administration announced finals plans to ban bump stocks across the country.
Bump stocks are devices that allow semi-automatic rifles to fire rounds faster. They work by causing a gun’s recoil to "bump" the trigger thus firing at quicker rates. The devices gained national attention following the Las Vegas shooting in October of 2017.
Under the Obama administration, bump stocks were dismissed as nothing more than a "gun accessory" not subject to federal regulation. However, under the current Trump administration, the Department of Justice argued that bump stocks turn semi-automatic rifles into illegal machine guns. If the ban takes effect, current bump stock owners will be given 90 days to destroy or surrender their bump stocks to authorities.
Because plans to ban bump stocks have been debated on for the past year, it is unsure if the Trump administration will go through with it. Recently, they claim that it will only be a matter of days or weeks before the ban is in place. Groups such as the NRA have played a role in hindering the ban and even Sen. Dianne Feinstein expressed her concern that the ban will likely lead to lawsuits.

I think that the Trump administration will never ban bump stocks, because so much of their money comes from NRA lobbyists. I suppose it's good that they're normalizing the idea of a republican government passing some small gun control measures, however. Even if it doesn't happen, it opens the door for future Republican discussion of gun control.
ReplyDeleteI think that if enough people supported it, Trump would push towards the bump stock ban. Trump usually acts according to what his supporters want, so they are usually the deciding factor of whether or not he will go through with the bump stock ban.
ReplyDeleteThe reducing of a gun modification is merely a baby step towards gun control. It is sad how partisan divide in politics takes lives. Trump's political agenda does not allow for full gun control, and America remains dangerous to itself. This is a step in the right direction however.
ReplyDeleteHonestly this shouldn't even be something we need to talk about it should be banned because why should there be a bump stock on rifles or any guns. And it's funny how it's Trump administration addressing this problem so it's a bit ironic since everything that's going on in the news about Trump so its more of a way to not focus so much on the negative but the positive.
ReplyDeleteI honestly think this is just for attention and that nothing effective will actually happen because it seems very unlike Trump to advocate gun restrictions and hes also been saying this is gonna happen for months and nothing has happened.
ReplyDeleteI think this is very suspicious based on what Trump has said and this will probably be a distraction to the other news. Or it just probably to silence the resistance against guns that has been going on
ReplyDeleteI think that the Trump administration will continue to delay the banning of bump stocks because it seems they don't want to go through with it as they keep putting off a final decision. I do think that banning bump stocks are a small step, the elimination of a tool that is used to increase the rate of fire will decrease the amount of casualties in the case of a shooting.
ReplyDeleteI think it's pretty strange that Trump would decide to take this action towards gun control, though I don't find it impossible. Since it is a relatively small step, this may just be a move to get more people to like him.
ReplyDeleteI feel that the Trump administration will ban bump stocks as it will make him look better. It is a small step in gun control that will please liberals.
ReplyDeleteI think the Trump administration will take the win for this one against the NRA and nationally ban bump stocks. It is for good reason because they are not necessary, nor practical, for those who enjoy recreational shooting and has the ability to reduce mass casualty during public shootings, as seen with Paddock's Las Vegas Massacre.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you on a lot of levels. Also, good point on how bump stocks are not necessary in recreational shootings for ex. hunting or in shooting ranges. There is a lot of truth there.
DeleteI do not think the Trump administration will ban bump stocks in the foreseeable future, because of how the Trump base is largely supported by the NRA and gun-loving rural demographics. I believe this is merely a publicity stunt to distract from recent controversies including the G20 summit and the Mueller investigations, largely due to how the Trump administration has promised a bump stock ban for the past year, but has never delivered.
ReplyDeleteI think banning bump stocks is a significant step for gun control, because bump stocks played an active role in the Las Vegas shooting, responsible for doves of casualties. This presents a notable step against mass shootings and are a positive stride towards gun control.
I am not confident that Trump is going to ban bump stocks out. I think that he is too worried about loosing support from NRA fans. I think that banning bump stocks is a step in the right direction, but should not be considered the permanent fix for our gun control issues in America.
ReplyDeleteI think that this step is significant for gun control, especially so as it is attempted by a group the NRA is most likely to listen to (if anyone). The fact that this is a goal for the Trump administration finally shows a common agreement upon Democrats and Republicans: current gun policies are dangerous. Of course, change may take a while to occur, but it does seem hopeless.
