On November 23, the Trump administration filed petitions to the Supreme Court asking to bypass federal appeals courts to consider President Trump’s policy restricting most transgender people from serving in the military. Trump said he was “doing the military a great favor” by “coming out and just saying it.”
The policy was released in March by Defense Secretary James Mattis that banned individuals who suffer gender dystopia from serving with limited exceptions. Individuals without the condition can serve, but requiring them to serve in their birth sex.
Between 4,000 and 10,000 US active-duty and reserve service members are transgender. Trump believed transgender military service would cause tremendous cost and disruption and said that he “had consulted” with his generals and military experts. However, Marine Gen. Joseph F. Dunford Jr., the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, released a memo effectively stopping the military from making any changes until a new policy was adopted, and Mattis backed the move.
District courts across the country have blocked the policy from going into effect. Taking the issue to the Supreme Court could put the question of whether to bar transgender troops before high court.
What do you think of the policy? Do you agree with it?

I think there are more issues for trump to worry about other than transgender people in the military. If a person is willing to risk their lives for the country, why should we not just be grateful?
ReplyDeleteI believe that gender shouldn’t be such of a defining characteristic when it comes to serving in the military, but one’s willingness to serve instead.
ReplyDeleteI don't agree with Trump's policy to ban transgender people from the military. Being transgender shouldn't restrict you from doing something anyone else can do. They are people who are willing to fight for the country and there's no reason to take them out when they are causing no trouble.
ReplyDeleteI believe that this is a discriminatory policy. This policy could tremendously backfire and cause our military to significantly decrease. The 4000 to 10000 people currently serving is a high number to largely prevent from serving. The policy could also lead to other people becoming dissatisfied with the army and either leave in protest or not join at all in the first place. Therefore, I wholly disagree with the policy, and I believe it is a good thing that the district courts come together to block the policy from going into effect.
ReplyDeleteIn all due respect, Trump's reasoning is just unreasonable. I personally, don't agree with the policy Trump proposes. I think one's identity shouldn't affect whether or not that want to serve in the military. In addition, by banning transgenders from military services, we'll lose 4,000 - 10,000 people, which also coincides with great job loss. Lastly, these people are putting their lives at risk to serve for the country, yet are being looked down upon and discriminated against; it's just not reasonable at all. Makes sense since the person proposing this policy is also unreasonable.

I don't think that the issue of whether transgender people can join the military should be much of an issue. I think the idea of this sounds like another pet peeve that the president cannot help but have, but I think that putting gender into consideration of whether an individual should be qualified to join the military is a bit farfetched from the purpose of what it means to serve one's country.
ReplyDeleteThe policy shouldn't be adopted because it limits the amount of people who want to serve for the military and their country, which is unfair and unjust.
ReplyDeleteThe military could use all the people it can get, therefore should be able to take those who are able-bodied regardless of what they identify as. Personally, I feel that the President is trying to place his own beliefs and interests into what makes up our country, which is not reasonable as a leader at all. A standing belief in America is that we are the land of the free, however this policy just calls for the complete opposite.
ReplyDeleteI don't think that the policy will be adopted because it discriminates against transgender people and violates their 14th amendment rights. If someone is willing to serve, they should be able to, especially when Trump wants to expand the military so much.
ReplyDeleteI disagree with the policy entirely. Thousands of people are risking their lives for the country while being wrongfully discriminated against. If people want to serve, then they should be able to regardless of their identity.
