President Wants to use Executive Order to End Birthright Citizenship

On October 30, 2018, Mr. Trump claimed that he wants to issue an executive order that would take away an amendment of the constitution. This order would take away the birthright of citizenship that all people that are born in the U.S have. Trump went on to say, “We’re the only country in the world where a person comes in and has a baby, and the baby is essentially a citizen of the United States for 85 years, with all of those benefits”. This seems to be another grasp for attention in the Trump presidency era, and this executive order would most likely fail due to the fact that it would require House, Senate, and State majorities to pass a constitutional amendment.

Even members of his own party , such as Paul Ryan have criticized this move, saying it will never happen, and that the 14th amendment is very secure. What Trump and team will try to do is get the supreme court to change the language of the 14th amendment to prevent birthright citizenship. This idea came after Trump’s administration moved 5,000 troops to the southern border, making it seem like this all part of Trump’s exaggerated claims about anti immigration. This executive order is extremely anti American, and strips away the rights that the constitution laid out for everyone on American soil.

Do you think that the Trump can issue this executive order?

What does this reveal about Trump’s priorities as a president?

  1. This is unconstitutional and entirely un-American in nature, and showcases the xenophobia and pure coldness within the POTUS. In my opinion, an amendment to the Constitution, especially with such a negative motive, will be very badly received and ultimately cannot pass. Trump may be able to issue this executive order, but he ultimately will fail due to the pure constitutional power within the Supreme Court, and if not, then the voters will find someone that will.

This executive order only further supports Trump's priority to whitewash America and slowly take away the votes of minorities. From a past of xenophobia, racism, and constant remarks targeting minorities, Trump only adds to the pile of evidence that he is not in the White House to serve all of America.

  2. The thought of this, though it may not be passed, is pretty absurd and frankly un-American. I don’t think Trump, in all his narcissism and self-proclaimed power, is enough to pass this to the point of it actually overriding what is on the constitution. Even if he is able to, I don’t think he should.

  3. I think this shows that Trump's priorities in immigration laws outweigh all of the other problems that exist in America. Trump's obsession over removing every single illegal immigrant has been shown through multiple attempts at passing laws and proposals, along with the wall. I think that this will not be passed, as it is crazy and un-American

  4. I do not think this will get passed. It is both unconstitutional and a waste of time. There are plenty of issues of actual importance that Trump could be focusing on instead of this.

  5. This will most likely not pass, for there is no good reason to enforce this and it is only to satisfy his priorities regarding immigration. He is not upholding his country, he is merely changing it to his liking. This shows me how selfish and ignorant he can be.

  6. I do not think this will get passed since both senate and house do not agree. It goes against the constitution and what america is. This emphasizes Trump's agenda on immigration.

  7. This won't get passed because like you said, it strips away the rights that the constitution laid out. I feel like Trump prioritizes things at the wrong time and the wrong way.
