Trump Considering a New Family Separation Policy for Illegal Immigrants

Image result for family separation trump      On Saturday, October 13th, President Trump stated that he is considering a new family separation policy at the United States-Mexico Border. The Trump Administration has been separating immigrant children from their families/parents since April of 2018, which Trump believes has been a successful way of deterring illegal immigrant crossings. The number of illegal crossings have increased greatly over the past months, and Trump feels family separation can be used as a scare tactic to stop the undocumented immigrants from coming.

Instead, they plan to compromise with the immigrant families by allowing them to choose between staying in family detention while their immigration cases proceed, or have their children taken to government shelters where their other family members can try to gain custody. Trump says that as our country's economic state improves, more and more people will want to come into the U.S., and if illegal immigrants "feel there will be separation, they won't come".

Do you think the Trump Administration should enforce a family separation policy for illegal immigrants? Are the options they provide for the immigrants fair? What are your thoughts on the policy itself?

  1. I don't think the Trump administration should enforce a family separation policy for illegal immigrants because I think it's unfair and inconsiderate that the kids would have to grow up without their parents, or lose their parents just because they came over illegally. I feel that the fact the government is giving families option is a step, but is still unfair. In my opinion, illegal immigration is not a good reason to split up families. There are better ways to enforce legal immigration, this is not it. I personally dislike and disagree with the policy and think that it's a very cruel thing to do.

  2. While this policy is more considerate of the family that the previous one, it doesn't seem like much of a choice for the family. Some people might argue that the new policy gives a chance for the children to live with a family member, but it still isn't promised that the children be under custody of a family member. (Unless I'm understanding this wrong) Couldn't someone with malicious intent try to claim the children?

  3. @Nhi, I agree with you because separating children from their parents would drastically affect the children's lives. Do you have any ideas for a better way to stop illegal crossings?
