ICE Air: The Airline You Never Want To Fly

Immigrants deported from the United States arrive on an ICE deportation flight on February 9, 2017 in Guatemala City, Guatemala.

On Wednesday, September 26, 2018, a new way to send back immigrants to their homes has opened up by President Donald Trump. So far this fiscal year this operation has gone over budget $107 million.

This airline is a one-way ticket for deportees to go back home, this operation has gotten busier and busier that countries around the globe are agreeing to take back deportees from the U.S. According to a fellow immigrant he experienced ICE Air for the very first time and he stated that they treated everyone on the flight like a felon, that they were handcuffed until 20 minutes later they took them off. You would expect at least there would be snacks or beverages but the only thing the deportees got were sandwiches.

Ice Air doesn't have as much space for all immigrants that get deported to fly that they send other deportees on commercial flights back home which costs money coming out of the governments pocket. Last year ICE Air flew roughly 97,000 migrants back home, they stopped by Gutamela first then followed in order Honduras, El Salvador, Haiti, the Dominican Republic, Brazil, Ecuador, and Colombia. As well on these flights, they send deportees to detention centers in the U.S. or even close to specific borders where then they ger busses back home. Each year the cost to sustain this operation to continue is rising especially since President Trump has come to office this year more and more people are getting deported.

Do you think they should continue this operation? Is it fair for deportees to be treated the way they are getting treated on these flights? What do you think about the government using their own money just to send immigrants back home?

  1. I think instead of constantly spending money on deporting immigrants and investing in these projects, that money should be spent on improving our educational system or bettering health care for the people. -Ying Wu

  3. The deportees shouldn't be treated like felons, as they are already being forcibly sent away. They should at least have some care or services provided to them. - jerry

  4. I think instead of spending money on deporting, they should use that money to help people who need help. I dont think its fair to treat the deportees the way they were being treated. They are not criminals.

  5. The way the deportees are treated on these flights aren't ethical, but with so many deportees, the government can only afford to give so much. I understand that the government is doing what it needs to get their job done, but there must be a better system to deporting immigrants.

  6. First, I think that it is awful to treat the people being deported like criminals because it is more than uncalled for with the circumstances. I am also concerned about the government spending so much money on something that really does not help our country that much, when we have so many problems in this country that are not being paid for or taken care of at all.

  7. I don't think that they should be continuing this operation because it isn't fair how these deportees are being treated like felons, when they haven't committed any serious crimes. Also, the government could be using their money on other important issues other than deporting people back and spending tons of money on it.

  8. I agree with Ying, it also isn't fair that they are being treated as felons.

  9. I don't think they should continue doing this because firstly the government is wasting money on this operation. Secondly, the service of this airline is inhumane for only serve a sandwich and have the deportees in handcuffs

  10. I agree with other people who commented above. I believe the way deportees are being treated is unfair. Additionally, I think that they should not continue this operation as it costs a lot of money (money that could be used on more important issues).

  11. They shouldn't continue this operation period. The main reason why is because they're being deported inhumanely by being handcuffed and only fed a meal. Another reason is because it shows the airlines participating in this in a bad light since it shows they support Trump as well. It is very unfair towards the immigrants. The government should focus all that money on other aspects to help the population instead of just on the immigration crisis going on.

  12. The government should not be spending more than their budget on transporting immigrants. I think the only way that this should be funded is by taxes from people who actually support the deportation of immigrants. It is also unfair for the immigrants to be treated like felons as they are already on the plane. They should not continue doing this until they find a new way to get funds/repay the debt.

  13. They should discontinue this operation because they are separating families and friends. These deportees are being mistreated as ICE treats like throwing out trash. The government could be provide benefits to the people with this funding. Tax dollars are being wasted and used to collapse our community

  14. To Ana Vucic, I totally understand where you are coming from that's why I presented this topic because people need to know that this is a problem and that the government needs to focus on other issues such as helping out people from the hurricanes or ending poverty.

  15. Should these operations continue, I think the government should try to be more ethical in their methods of deportation. Overall, I feel as if the government should stop mass deportation in order to save money that can be spent on beneficial projects.-Christian Wertman

  16. The U.S. does not need to continue this operation, the money going into it is unnecessary and might even make other government issues worse since there's less funding in other areas. Those deported should definitely not be treated like lesser beings, although I can see that because this is a government operation, they can't be always be treated with utmost respect, however they do deserve what the government can at least provide for citizens.

  17. I feel as if this operation is a waste of government funding, rather than using the money for sending them back, use it for domestic problems. As for how Trump is planing to send them back with handcuffs and one meal feels to me as unethical and very extra because they are not dangerous.

  18. I think that they should find a more cost-effective and efficient way to deport the immigrants. It is not fair that they have to be handcuffed and it also cost more. I mean they are already getting deported the least they could do is not handcuff them. I mean where else are they going to get the money.

  19. I really don't think that Trump has the right priorities. There are soooo many other issues that need the attention and money, and there are other ways to go about this whole situation in a better, more moral way. I can't imagine being in the position of an immigrant escaping danger only to be sent right back to it.

  20. I think this is a waste of our money and that we should put those $107 million towards education. These flights are inhumane and a waste of our resources. If the government truly wants to do this then I think that only illegal immigrants who have committed crimes should be sent back in this fashion. Those $107 million dollars could also be going to the victims of Hurricanes in Puerto Rico who are still recovering.

  21. Citing previous articles, I believe this is an entirely inefficient and unnecessary use of funds, not only because of the inhumanity but because of the sheer lengths Mr.Trump is reaching for when enforcing his agenda.

There are plenty of better departments and opportunities to fund (such as disaster relief ahem), but even then, I can understand where this sentiment is coming from. However, the ignorance is unbelievable and I can only hope Americans will vote for better, more human representatives.
