After an FBI investigation, sexual assault accusations, and weeks of heated debate, Brett Kavanaugh has been confirmed to the Supreme Court with the Senate vote of 50-48. He was sworn in hours after his confirmation with Chief Justice John Roberts and retired Justice Anthony Kennedy, whom Kavanaugh is replacing. Many people assembled outside to protest the new justice and more than 100 people were arrested, showing the controversy on his nomination.
The final Senate vote was 50-48, giving the Republicans a narrow victory. All Republican Senators voted for and all Democratic Senators voted against but three Senators. Democratic Senator Joe Manchin voted to confirm Kavanaugh, Republican Senator Lisa Murkowski was against Kavanaugh’s nomination but simply voted “present”, and Republican Senator Steve Daines wasn’t present to vote as he was attending his daughter’s wedding. With only a two vote difference, it is the closest nomination vote there has been since 1881.
With Kavanaugh, a conservative, now in the Supreme Court, the court will likely lean to the right. According to Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, Kavanaugh is against “environmental protections, women’s rights, civil rights, LGBT rights, Native American rights, healthcare protections and workers’ rights”. This will affect the Supreme Court’s rulings on cases in the coming generation.
Do you think Kavanaugh should hold a position in the highest court of the United States despite the incredibly close vote? How do you think his new position will affect the lives of people whose cases he will be ruling on?

I do not think that Kavanaugh should hold a position in the highest court of the US. Because the topic of sexual assault is very touchy with Kavanaugh, I think he will try to avoid those cases as much as possible.
ReplyDeleteI truly am disappointed and shocked at the result of the hearing. I don't think Kanvanaugh deserved to be in the supreme court. A judge needs to have a clean background considering he will be in enforcing the law. After this, I think everyone will be questioning his decision making in cases.
ReplyDeleteI think he shouldn't the highest court position with that close of a vote, I feel like it should be a majority like 60-40. His new position is going to affect a lot of people lives because with him in the supreme court, it's going to be more on the right. He gets to rule on cases like women's rights and LQBTQ and he's going to be affecting their lives, in maybe a not so positive way.
ReplyDeleteI agree that there should be a bigger majority for a vote like this. Having such a close vote means roughly half the country is against Kavanaugh. If he could not own up to the sexual assault allegations about himself, how will he rule on cases about just that? Being conservative, his vote may change many lives, like you said, about women’s and LGBTQ rights.
DeleteI don't think Kavanaugh should hold a position in the highest court of the United States because no one investigated the other accusations and he is also extremely controversial.
ReplyDeleteI think, by looking at Kavanaugh without being aware of him being accused for sexual misconduct, that he might be a decent candidate as a Senator in the supreme court. I think his ideas and moral are stuck in a time that is not contemporary society, which is why he would be against "environmental protections, women's rights, civil rights, LGBT rights, Native American rights, healthcare protections and workers' rights," which are all topics that a lot of people nowadays are very passionate about. I also think it's difficult for my generation to grow up knowing that Kavanaugh, who will forever be known for his misconduct, is making our laws and contributing to our freedom and rights.
ReplyDeleteI think that considering the extremely close vote, he shouldn't hold a position in the highest court of the US since his sexual assault allegations held against him. He shouldn't enforce the law if he wasn't able to uphold the law.
ReplyDeleteI believe for the sake of America and how the people look at the justice system, it would have been smarter to just pick another nominee. By putting Kavanaugh as a Supreme Court judge, many Americans will feel betrayed and thus further distrust the system. I think with such a close vote, almost 50% both sides, he shouldn't be appointed as judge. As Kavanaugh is known to be against “environmental protections, women’s rights, civil rights, LGBT rights, Native American rights, healthcare protections and workers’ rights," this will affect the numerous people who fall under these categories.
