Trump Plans to Pay $20 million to Mexico to Deport Illegal Immigrants

The Republicans have always been in favor of building a wall around the border between Mexico and the United States. This is an attempt to keep illegal immigrants from crossing through from the southwest border, and it became a hot topic during the presidential election of 2017. Building a wall was one of the promises President Trump made to the public during the elections, but it never went through because of funding conflicts. Initially, the U.S. had demanded Mexico to pay for the entire cost of the wall, but this was rejected immediately by the Mexican government. However, now President Trump is planning on paying $20 million in foreign assistance fund to help deport around 17,000 undocumented immigrants. This is not building a wall, but it is still a big step against illegal immigrants. Moreover, this large financial budget will unfortunately be drawn from the aid which was meant to support Palestinian schools and hospitals. Some of this money may also be coming from FEMA, the Federal Emergency Management Agency whose job is to provide aid to the disastrous outcome of hurricane Florence. This action may further polarize the Democrats and Republicans and cause more kids to be separated from their parents. What do you think about deporting immigrants? How would you solve the immigration crisis?

  1. I totally disagree with Trump's idea of building a wall to keep out immigrants. The money that Trump is using can be spent a better cause. Besides I feel like it is inhumane to deport immigrants that have spent much of their lives in the United States. The United States is their home and if they aren't causing any trouble I think they have every right to stay. As for immigrants that are caught sneaking across the border, it might be necessary to deport them because we can't just let everyone into the United States. Also they'd be less affected since they haven't spent any time in the United States and therefore haven't developed a bond that we be broken if they were deported.

  2. I don't think that deportation is the right course of action in this situation because it seems cruel to take away people who consider themselves Americans and work everyday to the benefit of our country. As for fixing the immigration system I have no idea how we will do that, but I know building a wall isn't going to solve the problem.

  3. I think that deporting immigrants is wrong and unethical. They have only crossed the boarder in order to improve their life and I doubt the immigrant have bad intentions when crossing the boarder. Moreover,I think that the 20 million dollars used to fund building the wall should not be taken from these organizations, as that can affect them negatively as well.

  4. I agree with the Democrats when they say that spending 20 million dollars on deporting the immigrants is A waste of money. Especially during this time where the money could be used for much better purposes like paying for the damages caused by the hurricane and helping the people recover from it. Trump is not using the money to try and help those in need, but rather trying to deport immigrants when most of them have been living in the US for a while now and not causing any troubles.

  5. I disagree with Trump's decision to build a wall to keep out immigrants, as it is unnecessary spending of government money. This money could be used for more immediate issues, such as the flooding of North Carolina. This decision by Trump highlights his impulsiveness on key issues, and his inability to notice the consequences of his actions. His inability to make key choices for the U.S will only result in more unnecessary spending, which will result in exacerbated future issues.

  6. Especially with the supposed hurricane of the century hitting the east coast of the United States, it is completely irrational to reallocate funds from the Agency that actually needs to tend to the destruction of the disaster, to a less important cause of deporting people. Why would Trump take money from something that is immediately needed and fund something trivial and unnecessary?

  7. In response to Justin's comment:

Yes, I totally agree that Trump can use the money in other areas such as FEMA more effectively. However, about the people who are just caught sneaking through the border, many of them have crossed all the way from Guatemala. A lot of them have given up everything at their homes to escape from gang violence or merely searching for a new opportunity. I understand that we shouldn't just allow an infinite amount of people to come to the United States, but what if we try to negotiate with the Mexican government to make life there better?

  8. To me, deporting immigrants is wrong. Most of them come here looking for a better way of life and to work so I don't see why some see them as a threat when they're far from that. Because of this I don't think it's necessary to solve the "crisis" because it further creates issues and division between U.S. born citizens and foreign citizens. The government should focus on other things rather than trying to control land that wasn't theirs to begin with.

  9. To be completely honest what Trump's idea of building the wall just to keep out immigrant is crazy. Like if he really thinks a wall might keep them out of the U.S. he has something else coming for him. And Trump giving the money to Mexico so they can do his dirty work for him is not the smartest idea he can use the money for other causes more important causes. If further actions need to be taken then there could be a different system or a different way to come at it instead of having Mexican citizens deport illegal immigrants where then could mess up the culture and the trust that people have with their communities.-K.C

  10. The critical dilemma lies in the direction of the funds under this special circumstance. Apparently, the stage of the hurricane is severe and should be the first receiver of the funds from the FEMA. While the funds should be directed to solving the hurricane, I think the issue of illegal immigration should also be resolved under the will of the current President in which he should look for other ways of funding to support his deporting policy.

  11. I think there should be ways to prevent immigrants from crossing over the broader, instead of just focusing on deporting all of them out. In addition, I don't think it is more important than giving funds to education, nor urgent enough for FEMA to help and support those that are affected by the hurricane. How about focus on the lives of those who are residents or citizens of the states first?

  12. Although I can understand why there is stigma against immigrants, I think the wall itself is an unreasonable solution to illegal immigration.

A wall is unnecessary and is more of a symbol of Trump's predisposition towards immigrants. Transferring budgets from departments in more urgent situations (ie FEMA) is uncalled for and could have been handled better. In addition, Trump transferred money from the Coast Guard directly to ICE's budget, which signals his priorities as President.

Yes, deportation of immigrants is un-American and wrong, but the deportation of undocumented immigrants not in the process of applying for US citizenship is a neutral topic for me. I personally think the citizenship application process can be refined and improved upon to ensure immigrants truly contribute to their lives and newfound country. Border patrol and a wall serves to only divide the American people, but a more refined system of identity checks and active citizenship applications can yield more specific results rather than keeping all out, at the expense of humanity.

  13. Trump's idea of building and wall and using $20 million to deport illegal immigrants from the USA is outrageous because the only real "crime" they committed is being undocumented.Trump should be focused on more bigger issues rather keeping people out of the country and not take funds and money out of programs that will benefit the country. In addition, the illegal immigrants are actually helping more than hurting by taking jobs that most people want to do (like farming), which actually is the reason why the country is able to develop and a vital role in the US economy. In conclusion, Trump should not be spending so much money and time on illegal immigrants, but tackling more serious topics. -naomi
